Norwegian
"Viking" Ale Bowl (Carved
in Basswood ~12" x 6")
The Viking
Ale ("Mead") bowls were drinking vessels believed to
first have been used by the Vikings nearly 1,000 years ago. Traditionally,
Ale bowls were used on special ceremonial occasions such as weddings,
baptisms and funerals. The fancier the ale bowl, usually the wealthier
the land owner. The bowls were considered a status symbol in Norway.
Ale bowls can take on a wide variety of shapes and forms limited
only by the imagination.
