Doug Oliver was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and now lives in
Flower Mound, Texas. He is married and has two children. Doug showed
an interest in art at a very young age and pursued different types
of art through school. He graduated with a BS degree in Geology
and now owns his own graphic design and woodcarving businesses in
the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.
In 1995, he discovered woodcarving by chance and has been carving
ever since. He has been working to establish and refine his own
style. The
source of his inspiration is derived from European, Scandinavian
and American influences.
Most carvings and sculptures are carved in Basswood, Butternut,
Mahogany and Pine. Most of the art work is stained or painted and
sometimes partially or wholly gilded. The color and the delicate
gold reflections give new depth to these works of art.

The
artist at Nueschwanstein Castle (Germany)
Doug
first carved in the chip carving style, a European
folk style that was first used and became popular
in the Middle Ages. By chance this method is what
several European carving schools start their students
with. Chip carving teaches attention to detail and
grain direction. He studied chip carving with Wayne
Barton in the Spring of 1997. Mr. Barton is one
of the premier chip carvers in the North America.
For over 10 years he studied traditional european
carving and sculpting under Bavarian Master Carver Ludwig Kieninger in the Dallas area.
Most recently, Doug studied Norwegian carving and
culture under Norwegian Masters Carvers Phillip
Odden and Else Bigton in the Spring of 2003.
